Fighting Dragons

Encounters with dragons are a cornerstone of a magi's journey. Typically, the magi will have to duel the dragon and prove their worth. This post will focus on two dragons in particular: the siblings Charlock and Winterra. Who are these dragons? What are their powers? How can a magi defeat them in a duel? And what legacy have they left for magi in the future?

The first dragon that most magi will encounter is Charlock, known as the Red Dragon. Charlock has devastating fiery breath. He can also attack with his powerful tail and (in later versions) can deal a magical attack with his eyes.

But fear not, fellow magi! Charlock can be defeated!

Fighting Charlock, Version 1:

1.) Using the symbols you have learned and the Portal Rune, enter Charlock's lair.

2.) Protect yourself when he breathes fire by using your Protection Rune. This can be cast immediately.

3.) Cast the Freeze Rune to hold him in place. This is the only cast in the encounter where timing is very important. Enthusiastic (or nervous) magi will want to cast immediately, but you actually need to wait until his flame animation is completed or your cast will not register. He begins to circle and you will have plenty of time to freeze him once his fire attack is done.

4.) Cast Ice Arrow to shoot a frozen arrow into the exposed weak spot on his side.

5.) Repeat Steps 1-4. These will always occur in the same order and you will slowly wear him down. You can expect it to take three rounds to win the duel.

Guardians of the Realm Portals has a slightly different Charlock encounter, but it's the same basic principle - guarding against Charlock's attacks and then casting your offensive spells.

Fighting Charlock, Version 2:

1.) When Charlock does a magic/psychic attack, protect yourself with the Portal Rune. You will recognize this attack because his eyes begin to glow.

2.) When he does a physical attack, use the Protection Rune. You will know he is about to use this attack because he will begin to swing his tail and move his wings.

3.) Freeze him in place using the Freeze Rune when he begins to rise, then immediately attack with the Ice Arrow Rune when he is frozen.

4.) As above, you will need to repeat the procedure a few times to win the encounter.

How do you know which of those to follow?

If your Charlock looks likes this, use Version 1.

If your Charlock looks like this, use Version 2.

Charlock's more powerful sister is Winterra. Her name is also sometimes spelled Wintera, and the two spellings seem to be used interchangeably by official sources. She is known as the Ice Dragon or (less commonly) as the Blue Dragon. Winterra can only be fought at a handful of locations by Master Magi. As of this writing, she only appears in Legacy MagiQuest content and has not been transferred into the 2.0 format. Her weapon is powerful cold that can instantly freeze unprepared magi.

This fight has more or less the same mechanics as Charlock, and uses enhanced versions of the same runes, but with an added step:

Fighting Winterra:

1.) Cast the Fire Shield to protect yourself from her attack.

2.) Once her attack has finished, cast a Reveal Rune to highlight her weak spot.

3.) Use Fire to freeze her in place.

4.) Shoot her with a Fire Arrow.

The order of this one is a little counterintuitive because you have to cast the Reveal spell before you freeze her in place. Presumably the logic of this is to give yourself a target. As with Charlock, you will need to repeat this sequence three times. Winterra's body will turn gold in three sections when you hit her with your spells; when her whole body is gold, you have won.

So, killing dragons?

Nope. Just dueling dragons. None of the dragons you combat in MagiQuest are killed during the fight. You just demonstrate your power, earn their respect, and they agree to stop terrorizing the locals. One might even say you gain their grudging friendship, since they promise to help you in your future journeys.

Dragon Wands and Toppers

Charlock and Winterra each have dragon wands crafted from materials found in their respective lairs.

A Red Dragon Wand is crafted from molten lava in the heat of Charlock's cave.

The components of an Ice Dragon Wand are formed slowly over a great span of time by ice flows in Winterra's frozen domain.

There are also two toppers associated with each dragon sibling.

The Fireburst Toppers represent Charlock. One is a dragon's head and one is a dragon gem. With these toppers you can instantly defeat Winterra - defeating ice with flame - in realms where she is present. The other functions of these vary from realm to realm, but they will typically allow you to defeat the Goblin King and/or Silver Dragon instantly too.

There are also two Iceburst Toppers representing Winterra, a dragon head and a dragon gem. The functions of these toppers also vary from realm to realm, but typically they can be used to defeat Charlock instantly, using ice to defeat flame. Some realms may register these toppers as interchangeable with Fireburst if they do not have both dragon encounters.

Dragon Relics

In the future of Vellara, the dragons have not been forgotten. Relics of these powerful beasts can aid you in your journey in Rise of the Totem Masters.

Charlock is represented by the Staff of Charlock's Vengeance, Charlock's Fang, and the Amulet of Charlock.

Winterra (as mentioned above, also spelled as Wintera) is represented by Wintera's Fang. Unlike Charlock, she does not appear in Guardians of the Realm Portals, so she would never have been seen in person at the locations where her relic is found.

Finally, the Dragonscale Shield. There is no definitive proof this is related to the sibling dragons; it could be scales from another red dragon. I think there is a good chance it's from Charlock, though, especially since he has a patch of missing scales on his side.

Dragons will always be part of MagiQuest. When we are fighting them, earning their loyalty, and befriending them - dragons like Charlock and Winterra help shape the magi we become.
